Degree Show Statement
With its never ending network of nerves, the brain is the most complex of maps. Every journey is different; we each experience life in our own individual way; our emotional, physical and mental experiences dictate the way we perceive information. I have taken the traditional representation of a map and used the principles as a way of bringing a familiar formula to life’s random pattern. My...
Four Tet- Train music video →
I like the way they have edited the video to look more abstract. It is obvioulsy a train journey but it has been altered to fit with the music.

Silent Crit-Train Journey Work
The silent crit was really helpful. I had to set my work up in my space, invite people to come and look, then be silent. There is no chance to explain my self or my work. It is a fantastic way to find out what people make of your work, what they read into it, and which parts hold their interest the most. Here are the notes I made from the Crit…

My name is John … and I’m a …Trainspotter. I have an black anorak with a brown furry collar which I wear most autumn/winter/spring days. I always carry a black notebook and a pencil (pens run out). During my lunchbreaks I’m usually to be found on a railway bridge near where I work. If I finish work on time you’ll see me either at the station car park or at...

I love this video. Being rather obsessed with trains and journeys as I have become I thought this really fitted into what I have been doing in recent work. Using objects that fly past my window as I journey through landscape on a train. Damn them for doing it so well before me. But it’s not actually real so ha! anyway, awesome!
Musical stones of Skiddaw →
These stones came from north Cumbria and were used to make an amazing xylophone by Peter Crosthwaite around 1785. On a walk he found that these stones created different sounds and set about searching for enough to create this beautiful instrument.

Just a simple, little interactive site. I thought it was fun and is just one example of how I could make my site interactive.

Another amazing illustrator.
Jane Ray →
I have always loved her illustrations. Gentle, dreamlike, and COLORFUL! I have realized that the past few projects have completely lacked color. My main focus has been the workings out, the idea, the advance in technology or skills, and I seemed to have left behind the colors that I love so much. They are somewhere in my first year. I also think the lack of color is due to the fact that I have...

Another artist whose work is made from documention of his environment using pictures, words, sound, video as well as the physical act of walking. He uses natural objects along the way to create sculptures.
I liked the way his exhibition utilized all means of his documentation. In one room there were vast sculptures brought in from their natural environment. There were words and lyrics on the wall...
Varied Documentation leads to deeper understanding... →
Hamish Fulton is a walking artist. He goes on walks and creates images/art after wards. I like the idea of being prepared to document any environment at any given time. Audio, visual, words, a bit like Richard Long, the varied documentation he makes creates a deeper understanding of the picture he has taken of the walk, it is the closest you can get without physically going on the walk.
VIBRATING WALKWAY
footsteps on the walkway trigger motors to vibrate strings, making a buzzing, droning sound which in turn causes LED lights to flash at each step
Testing out the walkway.

BIRD ACROSS PAGE
An idea for animating my sheet music. I like using tip-x to hide the last movement of the bird because it still leaves a trace of its journey/ musical pattern.

Interactive Dance Floor →
This looks so fun! In my work at the moment I have been trying to create a corridor of strings that hum according to the vibrations made by your movement. Whilst talking to a friend they mentioned this, so I had a look. I love interactive work and what I particularly like about this piece is the fact that it has the potential to be embedded within our culture. Ok, that doesn’t make sense. It...

These amazing machines by Brighton artist Felix Thorn, transform computer compositions into an intricate and captivating visual piece.
Bird Stave →
Just another example of someone using natural patterns to create music. The idea that music is just sound in space and time, this telephone wire stave carrying on that moment in time high above our heads through fields and towns.
Tone Matrix →
This is so fun! Random way to improvise music without knowing how to play an instrument. Experiment with patterns, beats and tone. I like the use of light and am working that into my work at the moment.

This is a rough video I made to help explain how to make ‘Natural sheet music’, using some of my sculptures.
